Bookmark this page, print the free printable list, and just remind yourself of resources like this before your next long trip… I promise, you’ll be able to breathe a little easier!

This summer, I was able to take part in a 3-family trip to Ireland: my fam, my dad and his wife, and my brother’s family.  We spent 10 full days in Ireland, so I needed to make sure everything was good to go before traveling.  I wanted to 1) make sure I had everything prepared for the actual traveling part as well as our stay and 2) be sure I wasn’t coming home to chaos.  I’ve split this into multiple lists so that you can stay organized as well!  Enjoy!

Packing Checklist

  • Documents (license, passport) are up to date and accessible
  • Magazines, puzzle books, etc. purchased as lo-fi options for travelers
  • All parties checked in (check for PreCheck on your boarding pass if you have Global Entry)
  • All electronics charged w/ chargers packed
  • Check forecast in destination and adjust what to pack
  • TV shows/movies/music/podcasts/books downloaded
  • Carry-on essentials packed (see bonus list)
  • Check with mobile provider for details on data roaming

Home Prep Checklist

  • Launder/change sheets & towels (it will be worth the time when you get home to fresh sheets and towels, I swear)
  • Crack the lids/doors of any appliance that uses water to prevent mildew/mold
  • Pet(s) boarding scheduled
  • Mail service paused
  • Pause any monthly subscriptions as needed
  • Dishwasher emptied, sink clean, coffee pot emptied
  • Thermostat programmed as desired
  • Power-suck items unplugged (i.e. my teenager’s LED lights and gaming system that he leaves on 24-7)
  • Lawn mowed if needed/landscaping scheduled
  • Lights on timers or turned off as desired

A Note on Global Entry…

A note on Global Entry/TSA Pre-Check: We currently have a platinum American Express card.  One of the main reasons for splurging on the rather high annual fee for this card is the Global Entry perk.  One of the offers from the card is a $100 credit toward your Global Entry application.

What does this mean?  Well, number one, when you’re flying domestically, you will automatically get TSA Pre-Check, allowing you to bypass the regular line at security.  Then, when you’re traveling internationally, you’ll be able to use the Global Entry line as you re-enter the United States.  This is awesome, as you basically just scan your face in front of a computer, then wait for the Customs Agent to call you over – I was through customs on my last trip in under 10 minutes.  Pretty sweet.

Additionally, this card gets you access to many airport lounges around the world. Grab a bite to eat or a much-needed cup of coffee on your next layover. Check card details for additional information.

Now to the printable Goodies!

Here are the printable versions of the lists above, plus two bonus lists: Carry-On Essentials and a Kids Packing Checklist.

Bonus Tips!

  • Don’t forget to empty the trash & recycle… no one likes coming home to a stinky house!
  • Clear out the fridge as best you can – we like to bring anything we can’t use before leaving to our relatives that live nearby so they go to good use!
